This work of art was painted by the artist Frei Carlos. The original version of the masterpiece was painted with the size 64 x 20 7/8 in (162,6 x 53 cm). Oil on wood was used by the Portuguese painter as the technique for the artwork. The artwork can be viewed in in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. This painting is on long-term loan to the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon, where it appears with this label:The figure of the deacon, in keeping with an elegant and elongated canon of representation, is clad in an extremely beautiful dalmatic and endowed with the canonical attributes of the patron saint of Lisbon: the palm of the martyr and the closed book in his left hand; a miniaturized boat drawn with great precision in his right hand. In the bottom left corner is the image of a snail, probably serving as a symbol of resurrection. This is the most recent incorporation into the catalogue of works by Frei Carlos, although it is still not known where exactly this panel was painted for.
