A bearded monk is standing in a vaulted room of great sobriety. Only a bench, a carpet, a religious portrait hung from the roof and a cross fixed to the left wall shall adjust the room.

Pupil of David and Ingres friend, François-Marius Granet stay in Italy between 1802 and 1824. Excepted Rome, the Italian cities attracted little. They preferred the solitude of convents and monasteries with beautiful effects of chiaroscuro harbinger of the Romantic spirit.
