Light enters the gantry ruined by the windows to the left, thus creating a contrast of light and shade. The extremity of the gallery opens on a landscape sky with clouds.

Pupil of David and Ingres friend, François-Marius Granet stay in Italy between 1802 and 1824. Excepted Rome, the Italian cities attracted little. They preferred the solitude of convents and monasteries with beautiful effects of chiaroscuro harbinger of the Romantic spirit. The treatment of the sky with clouds recalled here that the art of Granet formed by the study of ancient Dutch and Flemish painters. Moving away from the famous buildings in picturesque agreed he made the original studies of the Roman countryside which he translated simple and real way the collected lonely atmosphere.
