What does the curator team of the Barnes Foundation say about the 20th century artwork from the photographer, poet, engraver, painter and sculptor Edgar Degas? (© - by Barnes Foundation - Barnes Foundation)

Degas captures three ballerinas backstage during a performance. One rubs her foot while the others crowd around; bright theatre lighting falls on their bare arms and shoulders. Space is tightly cropped, filled up by overlapping bodies and gauzy tutus that merge into a field of electric yellow. Degas had a subscription to the Paris ballet, which allowed him behind-the-scenes access. He studied the dancers intently and revealed ballet as grueling physical labor.
