Salomon van Ruysdael, the uncle of Jacob van Ruisdael, here represents a free interpretation of the Castle Loevenstein. In addition to its picturesque qualities, the castle had great political and cultural importance as the official state prison and a key fort in the southern Netherlands. Painted just before the Dutch won independence from Spain in 1648, the painting likely expressed nationalist pride for its owner.
In 1644 Salomon van Ruysdael painted this baroque work of art called "Castle on a River". The original measures the size: Framed: 57 x 79 x 5,5 cm (22 7/16 x 31 1/8 x 2 3/16 in); Unframed: 39,3 x 60,5 cm (15 1/2 x 23 13/16 in). Oil on wood was used by the European painter as the medium of the masterpiece. Signed lower left on boat: "S.VR / 1644 (VR in monogram]" was the painting's original inscription. What is more, the alignment of the digital reproduction is landscape and has an image ratio of 3 : 2, which means that the length is 50% longer than the width. Salomon van Ruysdael was a male painter of Dutch nationality, whose artistic style was primarily Baroque. The artist was born in 1602 in Naarden and passed away at the age of 68 in the year 1670 in Haarlem.
