Original artwork description by the museum's website (© Copyright - by Art Institute Chicago - Art Institute Chicago)

Succulent grapes, crumbling cheese, sparkling wine in elegant glasses, and cognac in tumblers are depicted in this opulent dessert picture by John Francis. Originally an itinerant portrait painter, Francis turned to still life in the mid-19th century when the availability of daguerreotype portraits rendered his trade obsolete. The penchant for household embellishment among the Victorian middle class created a lively market for still-life paintings, which were often hung in dining rooms. While spirits are featured prominently in this painting, the glasses that are less than half full and the presence of the water indicate balance and restraint, referring to the mid-century growth of the temperance movement, which promoted the ideals of moderation and self-control.

Product materials that you can choose from:

For every fine art print we offer different sizes and materials. Choose among the following product options now to match your preferences in size and material:

  • Aluminium dibond (metal print): Aluminium Dibond prints are prints on metal with an outstanding depth. A direct Direct Print on Aluminum Dibond is your ideal start to fine art prints manufactured with aluminum. For our Direct Aluminium Dibond print, we print your favorite artwork right on the aluminium surface. The bright and white parts of the work of art shimmer with a silky gloss, however without glare. Colors are bright and vivid, the fine details appear clear and crisp, and there’s a matte look that you can literally feel.
  • Poster print (canvas material): Our poster print is a UV printed flat canvas paper with a slight surface structure. It is suited for framing the art print in a custom frame. Please note, that depending on the size of the poster we add a white margin between 2-6cm around the print, which facilitates the framing.
  • Acrylic glass print: A glossy acrylic glass print, often described as a print on plexiglass, will change an original work of art into beautiful wall decoration. Beyond that, the acrylic glass print forms a distinct alternative option to canvas and aluminidum dibond art prints. The great benefit of an acrylic glass fine art print is that sharp contrasts plus color details will be recognizeable due to the granular gradation. The acrylic glass protects your custom art print against light and heat for many decades.
  • Canvas: The canvas print is a printed cotton canvas mounted on a wood stretcher. A canvas print makes a cosy and comfortable atmosphere. A canvas of this artwork will give you the unique chance of turning your art print into a large size collection piece as you know from art galleries. Canvas prints are relatively low in weight, meaning that it is easy and straightforward to hang your Canvas print without extra wall-mounts.
