The Virgin in a Rose Garden—with the figure sometimes shown crowned—was one of the favorite courtly themes of late Gothic painting. The picture's style reflects Provost's training with the manuscript illuminator Simon Marmion in Valenciennes.

Specification of the print product

In 1495 the Dutch artist Jan Provost painted this 15th century piece of art. The beyond 520 years old original had the following size: Overall 12 1/4 x 6 3/4 in (31,1 x 17,1 cm); painted surface 11 3/4 x 6 1/8 in (29,8 x 15,6 cm) and was made with the techinque of oil on wood. Nowadays, this piece of art belongs to the digital collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. What is more, the alignment is portrait and has a ratio of 9 : 16, which implies that the length is 45% shorter than the width. The painter Jan Provost was an artist from the Netherlands, whose style was mainly Northern Renaissance. The Dutch artist was born in the year 1460 and died at the age of 69 in the year 1529.
