But for the fact that the bell tower collapsed, leaving only the stub of a building (which is now a small shop), the Baroque church and square of Santa Maria Zobenigo are the same today. Canaletto took the license of peeling back the buildings opposite the church and along an adjoining footpath, or calle, so as to expose the entire facade. The picture is from a series of twenty views that were probably painted for Joseph Smith, British consul in Venice from 1744 to 1760.

In 1730 Canaletto painted this artwork. The original measures the size: 18 1/2 × 30 3/4 in (47 × 78,1 cm). Oil on canvas was applied by the Italian painter as the technique for the artwork. The alignment is landscape with a side ratio of 16 : 9, which means that the length is 78% longer than the width. The painter Canaletto was an artist, whose art style can mainly be attributed to Baroque. The Italian artist was born in 1697 and deceased at the age of 71 in the year 1768.
