Dedreux, a popular painter of equestrian subjects, made at least two portraits of horses belonging to the Algerian military and religious leader ‘Abd al-Qadir (1808–1863) in the 1850s. Although a foe of the French following their invasion of Algeria in 1830, ‘Abd al-Qadir eventually earned the respect and admiration of his adversaries. It cannot be established with certainty that this is a portrait, yet the man depicted resembles the chieftan, whose likeness was widely disseminated through paintings, prints, and photographs.
