About 1900 Redon abandoned his trademark black charcoal drawings and began avidly experimenting with color. He also explored new subjects, including the mythological horses of the sun. They are driven by Apollo, god of light and poetry, or by Phaethon, the boy who foolishly tried to steer the horses and fell to his death. Redon made over thirty depictions of the motif in oil, pastel, and pencil. In this version, he omitted any indication of a ground plane, so that the horses and charioteer appear to race across a boundless sky.

The work of art was painted by the male French artist Odilon Redon. The more than 110 year old original version measures the size: 26 x 32 in (66 x 81,3 cm). Oil on canvas was used by the French artist as the medium of the piece of art. The artpiece belongs to the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is one of the world's largest and finest art museums, which includes more than two million works of art spanning five thousand years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe.. The French artist was born in 1840 and deceased at the age of 76 in the year 1916.
