At the beginning of his career, between 1854 and 1861, Fantin-Latour executed a large number of self-portraits in chalk, charcoal, and oil. This example reveals his fascination with the work of Rembrandt and Courbet, who both used broad, rich strokes of paint and depicted forms as if they were emerging from an enveloping darkness.​

In 1858 the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour painted the 19th century artpiece Self-Portrait. The beyond 160 year-old original version was made with the size: Overall 10 3/8 x 8 3/8 in (26,4 x 21,3 cm); original canvas 10 x 7 7/8 in (25,4 x 20 cm). Oil on canvas, laid down on canvas was applied by the French artist as the medium of the artpiece. Nowadays, this work of art can be viewed in in the digital collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located in New York City, New York, United States of America. Henri Fantin-Latour was a painter, graphic artist, botanical illustrator, lithographer, whose style can be classified as Realism. The painter lived for 68 years, born in 1836 in Grenoble, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France and passed away in 1904.
