Baker draws on the play "King Lear" written in 1606 by William Shakespeare. The king old, betrayed by two of his three daughters to whom he transmitted his kingdom, says the collapse of the values that founded his authoritarian rule. As told in the stage 2 of Act III, the king reduced to poverty and wandering, goes insane. The hostility of the rocky landscape echoes the torment of the character.
Louis Boulanger regularly covered topics literary. He found inspiration here in a Shakespeare play whose work was at that time rediscovered by Romantic artists. Despite the success runaway experienced by the painter at the Salon of 1827, this work was refused at the 1836 Salon.
