Between 1864 and 1868 Courbet undertook a series of paintings of the female nude. He could not have failed to witness the triumph of Alexandre Cabanel's Birth of Venus (Musée d'Orsay, Paris) at the Salon of 1863, along with the popularity of similar representations by Cabanel's fellow academicians. Here, Courbet evokes the myth of Venus, the goddess born of the sea, but slyly subverts convention by depicting the model’s underarm hair—an element of realism amplified by the almost palpable quality of her flesh.

This 19th century artwork "The Woman in the Waves" was painted by the male French painter Gustave Courbet in 1868. The beyond 150 year-old original version was made with the absolute size: 25 3/4 x 21 1/4 in (65,4 x 54 cm) and was made with the techinque of oil on canvas. Today, this piece of art is included in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, which is one of the world's largest and finest art museums, which includes more than two million works of art spanning five thousand years of world culture, from prehistory to the present and from every part of the globe.. The painter was born in 1819 in Ornans, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France and passed away at the age of 58 in 1877.
