Painter par excellence of Paris, Carolus-Duran is the elegant woman of her time in the guise of fould Margaret (1866-1956), wife of the banker Edgar Stern, then twenty-three years. She wears a red evening dress that leaves bare arms and ornament as only a pin at the tip of the neckline. The crescent moon diamond placed in the hair, the emblem of Diana, is a discreet reference to the allegorical portrait of the eighteenth century.

The painter Carolus-Duran quickly to fame. His fame led him to America where he produced numerous portraits for wealthy New York families.
