Hochstetter, Ferdinand * 30.04.1829 Esslingen (Germany), † 18.07.1884 Vienna, geologist and prehistory. Took 1857-59 at the Novara expedition in part, where he explored New Zealand. Professor at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna, in 1876 director of the Natural History Museum, built the anthropological-ethnographic department. President of the Geological Society, encouraged the creation of the Prehistoric Commission of the Academy of Sciences (1878). According to him, the 'Hochstetter-Dom' (mountain in New Zealand) and the 'Hochstetter Fjord' in Greenland are named. Ferdinand Freiherr von Hochstetter is a masterpiece created by Franz Rumpler. The beyond 130 year-old original measures the size of 140,5 x 90,5 cm.
