The head of John the Baptist is placed in a cup. Nimbus, he eyes closed. His thick hair fell heavily off the food in big curly locks. His ears are elongated and curiously detached from the head. The cup is richly decorated with pearls and colored gemstones; it is placed on a dark green base where a linear perspective is suggested.
The theme shown in this icon is quite rare. Unlike Western religious painting that does not hesitate to describe realistically death, Byzantine iconography emphasizes the resurrection, the victory over death. Therefore, the scenes depicting dead saints are infrequent. They appear in Russia especially from the seventeenth century, when Western influence is strongly felt.
