This painting illustrates one of the "Tales" by Jean de La Fontaine, "The Kiss made" gallant history and rural narrating the adventures of a peasant with a young nobleman courting the bread, the pretty Perronnelle, and who dared to reciprocate kissing his bride. The table is ordered as a theatrical representation: the curtain is removed, the column decor set up in front of a landscape backdrop, and a few accessories placed in front of the scene where the characters seem to be actors playing comedy.
Jean-Baptiste Pater participated with several other artists, to demonstrate the "Tales" by Jean de La Fontaine for "Suite Larmessin" published without the text to 1740. He performed a dozen tables were engraved by Pierre Filloeul in return between 1733 and 1739. the painting of the Cognac-Jay museum is a copy of the table illustrating the tale entitled "the Kiss made" kept at the Portland Art museum. The engraving of the "Kiss made", like that of its counterpart, "The Kiss gave" were announced in the "Mercure de France" in 1733.
