Firmin Tournus, former priest of the diocese of Lyon, came to the Faubourg Saint-Marcel share, from 1724, the ascetic life of the Jansenist François Pâris. The latter died in 1727, by dint of privation and various mortifications, provoked a stir, soon augmented by a series of miraculous healings on the place of burial in the cemetery Saint-Medard. The place soon offered the spectacle of real scenes of mass hysteria - the "convulsionaries" Saint-Médard - which led to the closure of the cemetery by the police in 1732. Restout painted several other portraits of Father Tournus, the deacon Paris enthusiast of the followers.
