The painting depicts the scene of the departure of the prodigal son, the Gospel parable of Luke. This neo-Renaissance work is a direct reference to the Venice painted by Vittore Carpaccio in the "Legend of St. Ursula" from 1490.

Tissot uses the genre painting the codes to treat a biblical subject. Great care is taken to the description of the Venetian sets and costumes. At this table is assigned a while, "Return of the Prodigal Son", also kept at the Petit Palais.
