What does the curator team of the Maison de Victor Hugo - Hauteville House say about the 19th century artwork painted by Emile Champmartin? (© - by Maison de Victor Hugo - Hauteville House - www.maisonsvictorhugo.paris.fr)

Charles, the eldest son of Victor Hugo is represented around the age of eight, three-qaurt looking worm sla right.

This painting was hung in the billiard room of Hauteville House and among the portraits that were offered by the Hugo family for the creation of the museum and replaced in Guernsey by copies executed by Eugenie Venot of Auteroche. It is identified in the inventory of the donation under the number "108 Charles Hugo, portrait from Champmartin". In its correspondnace with Paul Meurice, Eugenie Venot of Auteroche evokes difficulties to copy this portrait of Charles. It seems there's been confusion from his exhibition at the museum, Place des Vosges on the identity of the model with a table having been on the sale of the studio of the artist in 1888. Indeed, this portrait is recognizable on a photograph of the second chamber of intimate museum on the third floor, in the inaugural clash Museum in 1903, reproduced in Gustave Simon guide that simply states "- a portrait François-Victor child. "It would be surprising that the eldest son of Victor Hugo was not portrayed as the François-Victor was alongside his father.
