Inspired by the Gospel according to Saint Luke, painting is the parable of the Good Samaritan. In a rocky landscape, an old man emergency door to a naked man wounded in the head, which seems to have vanished. The Samaritan the sitting keeps his heavily laden donkey, while advancing facing the viewer.

An avid animal subject, Morot gives the modest figure of the donkey crushed by his load a moving presence. It gets this table with the medal of honor at the Salon of French Artists in 1880.
