This painting, which initiated a series of pictures devoted to the lives of women, shows Courbet’s three sisters—Zélie, Juliette, and Zoé—strolling in the Communal, a small valley near his native village of Ornans. One of the girls offers alms to a young cowherd. Courbet had high hopes for the work, but when it was exhibited at the Salon of 1852, critics attacked it as tasteless and clumsy. They reviled the models’ common features and countrified costumes, the "ridiculous" little dog and cattle, and the overall lack of unity, including traditional perspective and scale.

This modern art painting was made by the male French artist Gustave Courbet in the year 1851. The more than 160 year-old original measures the size: 76 3/4 x 102 3/4 in (194,9 x 261 cm). Oil on canvas was applied by the European artist as the technique for the artpiece. This work of art is part of the art collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We are delighted to state that this artpiece, which belongs to the public domain is being included with courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Gift of Harry Payne Bingham, 1940. In addition to this, the alignment of the digital reproduction is landscape and has a side ratio of 4 : 3, meaning that the length is 33% longer than the width. Gustave Courbet was a painter, sculptor, communard, whose art style can be attributed primarily to Realism. The European artist was born in 1819 in Ornans, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France and deceased at the age of 58 in 1877.
