Canaletto shows the business and commercial center of Venice. The distant building with an arcade at ground level and many chimneys was the warehouse of the German merchants, the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. Just to the right is the foot of the Rialto Bridge, and, at further right, the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi. Then, as now, the rose-colored buildings and the spaces in front housed the fruit and fish markets. The picture is from a series of twenty views that were probably painted for Joseph Smith, British consul in Venice from 1744 to 1760.

Besides this, the alignment is in landscape format and has a ratio of 3 : 2, which means that the length is 50% longer than the width. Canaletto was a male painter from Italy, whose artistic style can be classified as Baroque. The painter lived for 71 years and was born in 1697 and deceased in 1768.
