This painting dates from the early years when Hubert Robert lives and works in Rome. The common people of Rome moved shamelessly in the ruins that reuses prosaic purposes. These unexpected scenes, discovered strolling around in the Eternal City, to the imagination of the painter and enter sustainably in its iconography. His contemporaries will see the latest illustration of the ravages of time which inexorably destroys the evidence of the grandeur of past civilizations. But for now, the young artist enjoys and relishes the pleasure of painting. Here is an ancient monument transformed into "dyeing" the place where one whitens fabrics. The strong contrast of shadow and light, large draperies and vertical lines barriers slatted rhythm clearly the composition. Fire vapors that stir the atmosphere are the pretext for a dazzling piece of painting.

The Laundry was part of the collection of J. S. Young (Shuffield, Kent). Then, it is located in a private collection in Heidelberg. In 1992 he was put on sale in the Cailleux gallery in Paris, and bought at the beginning of the following year by the Museum of the Petit Palais, on arrears legacy Dutuit to 1.2 million francs.
