The painter, graphic artist, botanical illustrator, lithographer Henri Fantin-Latour was an artist, whose art style can primarily be attributed to Realism. The Realist artist lived for a total of 68 years and was born in the year 1836 in Grenoble, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France and passed away in the year 1904.

This study of pansies in a basket was painted the year before the artist's death. Although the motif is reprised from his larger and more highly finished composition of 1874, Still Life with Pansies (66.194), these flowers were probably painted from life, which is consistent with Fantin's practice.
