Oil on canvas oval, rectangle extended in

At the 1793 Salon (158) displayed a painting of Hubert Robert, who could be "The Accident" of the Cognac-Jay Museum. Unfortunately, the Salon handbook does not specify the work's dimensions. On the other hand, Antoine Pelletier Liancourt, Viscount of Villers-Helon, commanded Hubert Robert several top-of-door and a version of "The Accident", which were dispersed between 1792 and 1795. Is -it version of the museum Cognac-Jay? It seems unlikely that "The Accident" ordered to Villers-Helon castle could be at the 1793 Salon, but this is not excluded. The Cognac-Jay Museum preserves another painting by Hubert Robert, "The Drinker", seen as the counterpart of "The Accident". But if it is the work exhibited at the 1793 Salon, or top-to-door of the castle of Villers-Helon, it can not be for the original "The Trough" dated 1804. These two paintings would therefore associated only at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Further complicating assumptions about the history of these tables, two paintings by Hubert Robert, which have the same subjects treated identically, but the dimensions are different, were sold in while in Paris, March 4, 1961 (palace Galliera, "The Reckless", No. 7a, fig. pl. VI and "ancient Trough", No. 7b, fig. pl. VI). These two works not currently located, and are signed, according to the auction catalog, "The Drinker" is dated 1800. We do know that by poor photographs that do not allow to judge their quality . If these two works are in the hand of the artist and if the mentioned date is correct, it would therefore be earlier than four years pending the tables Cognac-Jay. This version of "The Accident" could be, certainly, too, the picture of the 1793 Salon, which the artist would have associated in 1800 for a more melancholy inspiration, however it is very likely that the two works have were executed on the same date and the paintings acquired by Ernest Cognacq are beautiful replicas autographs, painted in 1804 (see Burollet, Therese, 2004 p.268-269).
