Important information: We try everythig possible in order to depict the art products as precisely as possible and to display them visually. Although, the tone of the printed materials and the printing may diverge slightly from the image on the monitor. Depending on your screen settings and the condition of the surface, not all color pigments are printed one hundret percent realistically. This painting and Beggar with Oysters were probably conceived as companion pieces. Édouard Manet exhibited them together in 1872, along with paintings of an absinthe drinker and a ragpicker, under the collective title Philosophers. The beggars of Paris, nonconformist types under threat from government schemes intended to drive them out of the city, held a particular fascination for Realist artists and writers. By setting his large-scale figures against empty, dark backgrounds, Manet added to their portraitlike, indeed heroic, presence. By a remarkable coincidence, at the turn of the 20th century, these two closely related works found their way by very different means to the Art Institute’s collection.

This painting was made by the realist master Édouard Manet in 1870. The over 150 year old original was made with the size: 187,7 × 109,9 cm (73 7/8 × 43 1/4 in). Oil on canvas was applied by the European artist as the medium of the piece of art. The artwork's inscription is the following: inscribed lower right: Manet. Today, this artpiece is part of the Art Institute Chicago's digital art collection located in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. The modern art artwork, which belongs to the public domain is being provided with courtesy of Art Institute Chicago. The creditline of the artpiece is the following: A. A. Munger Collection. On top of that, alignment of the digital reproduction is portrait and has a side ratio of 9 : 16, which implies that the length is 45% shorter than the width. Édouard Manet was a painter of French nationality, whose artistic style can primarily be assigned to Realism. The artist was born in the year 1832 and died at the age of 51 in 1883 in 8th arrondissement of Paris.
