The Duke of Angoulême, baby aged about a year, door hung on a black silk knot, eight-pointed cross of the Order of Malta, topped by a royal crown, which reveals her title of Grand Prior of the sovereign order of Malta.
The name of the author of this portrait, formerly attributed to François Boucher, comes by comparison with an engraving of Nicolas Ponce with the title "Innocence custody of Fidelity", performed by an array of Bounieu exposed to the 1769 Salon (No. 186 of the book), "the Portrait of a sleeping child in the care of a dog." The canvas of the Cognac-Jay museum would be a modified version of the portrait engraved by Ponce.Le booklet 1779 Show (No. 141) states that there Bounieu stated "A child from the waist, resting on a pillow." Although the dimensions of the table do not exactly match, which is common, and the Royal identification is not mentioned, it is likely that the work was well exposed the portrait of the Duke of Angouleme museum Cognac-Jay, painted shortly after the appointment of the dependent child of grand prior of the sovereign order of Malta late 1776 (see Burollet, Therese, 2004 p.75).
