This vigorously painted portrait of Augustine Roulin and her infant daughter, Marcelle, is one of Van Gogh’s many evocative renderings of the Roulin family, undertaken some six months after the artist relocated from Paris to Arles. Van Gogh painted the entire family of the local postman Joseph Roulin. Here, the chubbycheeked infant is the focus of the enterprise. Her heightened expression in thickly painted brushwork suggests that the baby may have posed for van Gogh, swaddled in her mother’s embrace. Augustine Roulin, by contrast, is an abbreviated presence.

In 1888 the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh painted the post-impressionist masterpiece. The beyond 130 year old original measures the size: 25 x 20 1/8 in and was manufactured with the medium oil on canvas. The artpiece forms part of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. We are pleased to state that the masterpiece, which is part of the public domain is being included with courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Robert Lehman Collection, 1975. The alignment is portrait with a ratio of 1 : 1.2, which implies that the length is 20% shorter than the width. The painter, botanical illustrator, printmaker, drawer Vincent van Gogh was an artist from the Netherlands, whose art style can mainly be assigned to Post-Impressionism. The European artist lived for 37 years, born in 1853 in Zundert, North Brabant, Netherlands and died in the year 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, Ile-de-France, France.
