On a dark sky dimly lit by the twilight, stands the body of Christ crucified, to the skeletal body wearing only a loincloth. Looks up on which rests the crown of thorns skyward. Above him, on the cross, we can not see the top, is nailed the inscription "I.N.R.I" (Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews).

The work was commissioned in 1873 to the courtroom of the Court of Assizes of the Palace of Justice in Paris to embody in the eyes of the accused divine justice and remind them of the suffering of Christ to save sinners. Presented at the 1874 Salon, table Bonnat to renew radically the traditional representation of Christ on the cross. The crucified and represented extremely realistic manner, emphasizing the suffering due to death. Bonnat model would have taken a corpse nailed to the boards.
