In 1783, Hubert Robert roams the southern cities of France and remains, particularly in Nîmes, where several ancient remains were already updated. Maison Carree particularly caught his attention since he was repeatedly the subject of his paintings. It reinvents here totally monument erecting above a river where women wash clothes. The environment is no longer that of the city, but that of nature populated by ancient remains. This iconic landmark is found in many of its scenic compositions, as in "Nimes, to the Square House" (Rome, Palazzo Barberini), in "Ancient Temple, said the Maison Carree in Nimes" (St. Petersburg, Museum of Hermitage), or in "the Square House, the arenas and the Tour Magne at Nimes" (Paris, Louvre). It was suggested, however, that the picture of the Petit Palais has been the latest in a long series on the theme of the Maison Carree Nimes because it offers perhaps the sight of the monument, in which Hubert Robert leaves more free rein his imagination in creating a dialogue nature and Antique. Hubert Robert made this "House" the factory of a garden he could draw, in which the jet of water from the background reminds all the fantasy of his creations.

The table is entered in the collections of the Petit Palais thanks to the legacy of Augustus Dutuit in favor of the City of Paris (1902).
