In the second of the large paintings from Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s sequence illustrating the story of Rinaldo and Armida, the crusader Rinaldo has been abducted by the sorceress Armida. She has carried him away to her magical garden, where he sits enthralled, gazing into her eyes while she looks into a magic mirror. The knight’s sword and shield have been cast aside. However, his two companions, Carlo and Ubaldo, appear at the garden gate to persuade him to return to their quest to liberate Jerusalem.

The artwork Rinaldo and Armida in Her Garden was created by Giambattista Tiepolo in the year 1745. The over 270 year-old original creation has the following size 186,7 × 259,4 cm (73 1/2 × 102 1/8 in) and was painted with the technique oil on canvas.
