Of all the followers of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783–1853), the founding father of the Golden Age of Danish painting, only Petzholdt devoted himself exclusively to landscape. Although the precise location of this small view has not been determined, it was evidently painted in Germany, where the artist sketched in 1829 and again the following year.
