Angelika Kauffmann has developed during their long stay in London from 1766 to 1781 a portrait style, which follows in many fields of view by Joshua Reynolds, but is very independent. Typical of the painter is their empathetic portrayal people whose effect is sometimes complacent, but consistently imbued with the intention to give the model a touch of grace. The influence of English portraiture is reflected in the emphasis on the individual and in the absence of status symbols. So John Simpson presented (1738-before 1789) in a casual attitude, just as it would not be aware that he is painted.
