Lady Caroline Howard, daughter of Frederick, the fifth Earl of Carlisle, and Margaret Caroline Howard, and niece of Lady Delmé, was portrayed by Reynolds at the age of seven.

Reynolds deliberately imposed on his compositions certain formal artistic qualities that would give them the solidity and nobility of Greek, Roman, and Renaissance art. He also liked to suggest associations in his portraits that elevate them to some level beyond the merely descriptive. Roses are symbolically related to Venus and the Three Graces, and Reynolds may well have intended to allude to their attributes, Chastity, Beauty, and Love, as ideals to which Lady Caroline should aspire.

Lady Caroline's father affectionately described his daughter as a determined, strong-minded child whose need for discipline he met fairly but reluctantly. He wrote that she was "always a great favorite," suggesting that her spirited personality made her faults tolerable. Reynolds captured some of Lady Caroline's complexity in the serious, intent expression of her attractive face, her averted gaze, and the tension implied in her closed left hand.

Obtain your favorite fine art print material

We offer a range of various materials and sizes for every product. Pick your favorite material and size among the subsequent choices:

  • The poster print on canvas material: The Artprinta poster is a printed canvas with a slight structure on the surface. Please note, that depending on the absolute size of the poster print we add a white margin of around 2-6cm around the painting, which facilitates the framing with your custom frame.
  • Acrylic glass print (with real glass coating): An print on acrylic glass, which is often referenced as a plexiglass print, will change an original artwork into gorgeous décor and offers a distinct alternative option to canvas and dibond art prints. The great advantage of a plexiglass fine art print is that contrasts as well as color details become more recognizeable due to the very fine tonal gradation of the print.
  • Aluminium print (aluminium dibond): Aluminium Dibond prints are prints on metal with an outstanding effect of depth, creating a modern look thanks to a surface , that is non-reflective. For our Print On Aluminum Dibond, we print the chosen artpiece right onto the surface of the aluminum.
  • The canvas print: A canvas print is a printed cotton canvas mounted on a wood stretcher. It has the distinctive impression of three-dimensionality. The printed canvas creates a cosy and positive look. A canvas print has the great advantage of being low in weight, which implies that it is quite simple to hang up the Canvas print without extra wall-mounts. Because of thatcanvas prints are suited for any kind of wall.
