Supplemental description from Rijksmuseum (© - Rijksmuseum - Rijksmuseum)

A watery landscape with an assortment of mills: at first sight a typical Dutch scene. Yet the purple mountains in the distance suggest an Italian view. To convey the wide panorama, Philips Koninck adopted a high vantage point. He depicted several majestic trees, rendered in brownish-green impasto in the foreground. Further back, a meandering river leads into the distance, where cooler colours dominate.
