The boy is dressed "to the Spanish" a cloak of black velvet on which blossoms a large white chiffon ruched collar. He wears a wide-brimmed hat, black felt, plumed with white feathers. The reference to the art of the seventeenth century Nordic is twofold: the costume evokes Spanish Flanders and pomp portraits of Peter Paul Rubens, the layout and the color of sobriety remember instead of Rembrandt.
