The Pyramid of Caius Cestius, the Temple of Saturn, columns lying on the ground or the bas-relief are all ancient ruins Hubert Robert was able to admire during his trip to Italy (1754-1764) and he assembles arbitrarily in this toile.Fasciné by antiquity, as were his contemporaries, Hubert Robert has filled many books of his drawings from life. This is also from the drawings made in Italy, especially in Rome, he composed the table by putting side by side various remains, a modern sculpture of Hermes, reminiscent of a bronze by Giambologna and characters that add to the picturesque scene. The pattern of the pyramid of Caius Cestius seems to have attracted particular attention since it represents the painter in several paintings, as in "Alexander the Great at the tomb of Achilles" (Paris, Louvre) which uses elements similar to the table of the Petit Palais, but presented in a different light. Many were the painters' ruinistes "in the eighteenth century. What characterizes the works of Hubert Robert, and gives them their originality is the virtuosity of the treatment of light and delicacy of the restricted color palette.

On 18 July 1918 C.-V. Ocampo, in living in Buenos Aires, bought the painting and its "The Cascatelles Tivoli" (PPP02547), J. Allard and Boussod, Valadon & Cie, for $ 4 000frs. The two tables will be presented in his Paris hotel of the XVII arrondissement, until 1931, when he donated it subject to usufruct, to the City of Paris. The usufruct is up in 1942. Put on deposit at the Hotel Lauzun in the middle of the twentieth century, the two counterparts have reinstated the Petit Palais in early 2000.
