Original description from Belvedere (© Copyright - by Belvedere - Belvedere)

Johann Gottfried Auerbach was one of the most important portrait artists of the first half of the 18th century in Vienna and worked especially for the imperial court. Prince Eugene was portrayed several times by him, with two more, the painting presented here similar, but different versions in Riegersburg in the forest district and in Molsdorf Palace are described in detail in Thuringia. The third is originally from the collection of the Marquesses of Tweeddale in Yester House and was later owned by the composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who had purchased the estate in the 1970s. The eminent builder and patron is shown here as a general in the cuirass and the Order of the Golden Fleece, while Mohr Page brings his helmet. Whether the battle as well as the bombed fortress scan in the background on a specific historical event is questionable. Anyway, it's likely that the work was created around 1725/30; at a time when that was not marked by military operations and the sitter allowed to devote much time its legendary collections.
