This episode of the Greco-Roman mythology is derived from "Metamorphoses" of Ovid. On the order of Jupiter, Mercury has sleep shepherd Argus the sound of the flute in order to deliver Io, the lover of Jupiter, turned into a white heifer and placed by Juno guarded by Argus. Figures are grouped around the large oak tree in the foreground which constitutes the axis of the composition. Besides the two seated figures, is a herd of cows and goats.
