What does the Barnes Foundation say about this work of art painted by Titian (Tiziano Vecellio)? (© - Barnes Foundation - Barnes Foundation)
When Albert Barnes purchased this painting in 1928, it was attributed to the Venetian Renaissance artist Titian. Recent scholarship has suggested the portrait is instead by a member of the school of Alessandro Bonvicino known as Moretto, from Brescia, a city in Lombardy under the influence of Venice. The unknown sitter (earlier thought to be the orator Francesco Filetto) and his son are shown in half-length in front of a neutral background. The uncertain gaze of the boy draws the viewer into the painting. Portraits such as these were commissioned by patrician families as a reflection of their stature.
