This painting shows a landscape in the neighborhood of Rotterdam, in a moonlight. In front of a dam, a barge overtaken by two boats docked. On the boat on the bank of the characters are busy. On the left, behind trees, lies the village whose steeple is reflected in water. There are windmills on the horizon.

After spending nine years in France, Jongkind returned to Holland to the death of his mother between 1855 and 1860. He worked there many, selling cheap these landscapes around Rotterdam animated windmills and canals he sent to his dealer, Father Martin in Paris. This table is part of the series of views of Overschie performed during this Dutch stay.
