Many artists went to the bedside of Victor Hugo after his death to his portrait done postmortem. These were generally available to memebres family. Dedicated to Georges Hugo by Leon Bonnat - who had painted the portrait of the poet in 1879 (MVHPP0205) - it was offered to the small son of Victor Hugo who, in turn, presumably donated to the Museum for its opening in along with his mother and sister he offered the furniture in the death chamber. This painting was also presented from the inaugural clash in the reconstitution of the room of the Avenue d'Eylau.
