In an ornate gilt frame, a nun stands at the bedside of an old man near death, a child looks on behind a wall while a woman crying painfully at the foot of suffering. Out of the frame in the lower right corner, symbolizing winter, a woman wearing a heavy coat warms up near a brazier.

In winter fourth sketch of a cycle of seasons associated with the stages of life, is part of a set of 4 projects submitted to the open competition by the City of Paris in 1879 for the decoration of the wedding room of the Town Hall nineteenth district of the City of Paris.
