Original information about the work of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art website (© - by The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

Possibly painted in Spain, where Giandomenico traveled with his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, to fresco ceilings in the Royal Palace of Madrid in 1762, the picture vividly evokes life in the artist’s native Venice. The white masks (morette) and short black veils (baute) were worn by elegant residents and visitors during the carnival season. A small cabin (felze) was installed over the gunwales of the gondola in winter. The silvery tonality and delicate handling make this enchanting picture exceptional.
