Canaletto painted this view of the much-rebuilt Norman castle about twenty miles from Birmingham during the nine years he lived in England, where he went when war reduced the number of British customers visiting Venice. The view is one of a number of paintings and drawings commissioned from Canaletto by the castle’s owner, Francis Greville, Lord Brooke (1719–1773), later first Earl of Warwick, one of the Venetian artist’s most important English patrons.
