Poussin executed this painting soon after his arrival in Rome. Understood as an allegory of vanity, it represents the story of King Midas, from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (completed 8 A.D.). Midas had been granted a wish from Bacchus: everything he touched would be turned to gold. But he soon realized that he could neither eat nor drink, and to rid himself of what had become a curse he was told to wash in the Pactolus River. Partly submerged in water, Midas is accompanied by a personification of the river god.
