Samson the Israelite and the Philistine Delilah are the main characters in this scene from the Bible. Delilah seduced Samson, to find out the secret of his superhuman strength. She discovered that if his hair were cut he would be as weak as any other man. Lievens painted Samson sleeping on Delilah’s lap. She is handing a pair of scissors to an accomplice to cut Samson’s hair.

The artpiece was created by the baroque painter Jan Lievens in 1630. What is more, the artpiece belongs to the Rijksmuseum's collection in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The painter Jan Lievens was an artist, whose style can primarily be classified as Baroque. The painter lived for a total of 67 years - born in 1607 in Leiden and died in the year 1674 in Amsterdam.
