Scenes of The Annunciation were regularly depicted on the upper parts of large polyptychs, and that accounts for this small roundel, undoubtedly one of a pair with another, which would have shown the archangel Gabriel announcing the Virgin’s conception. When such altarpieces went out of fashion, they were often dismembered and the fragments found their way into private collections.
Attributed to Lorenzo di Niccolò, c. 1392 - c. 1412.
