The painting depicts an episode from the life of St. Thomas Aquinas, preaching faith in the goodness of God during a storm. The composition is organized into two contrasting groups. To the left in the foreground, in a boat, several characters are plagued by anxiety: a mother holding her child in her arms, a praying person. At the bow of the boat, Aquinas, profile, pointing the sky with confidence. The haloed saint holds a cross, a rosary exceeds the mantle which he draped.
This topic refers to a little-known episode in the life of St. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274). "En route to Paris, when he had to undergo a terrible storm and the sailors already feared death itself remained unflappable throughout the turmoil." The government commissioned this painting in 1823, 500 years after the canonization of Thomas in 1323. It was intended to St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Paris.
